Portuguese cuisine is typically hearty, relying on fresh ingredients. From the mountains in the north to the rolling hills and plains of the south, Portugal offers a wide range of culinary delights.

We suggest a tour around the Mercado da Ribeira, hands-on cookery class, lunch and storytelling in a unique place that will make you travel through our heritage with the Chef Luisa Sobral.

FROM TUESDAY TO SATURDAY

Tour around the Mercado da Ribeira, hands-on cookery class, lunch and storytelling in an unique place that will make us travel to our heritage with the Chef.

The Mercado de Ribeira  (also known as Mercado 24 de Julho) is Lisbon's main food market since 1892, when it opened with an iron interior and a large oriental dome. In 2014 it was taken over by Time Out Lisboa magazine, whose management added stalls offering food and traditional local products.

Why is a famous publishing name hanging from the roof of a historic market hall? And why is a team of journalists running one of the world's largest gourmet food spaces? The answers to these questions are in the project's name: Time Out Market. A concept created from scratch in 2014 by the team at Time Out Portugal, with only the best ideas and business projects in Lisbon - according to the editorial team - which can stay in the market from one week to three years. If it’s good, it goes in the magazine, if it’s great, it goes into the market.

Chef Luisa, loves to cook, talk and speak different languages. She is a client of Ribeira market for over 30 years, and at one point she was talking to the tourists and they asked how they could cook certain foods ... and at that moment she began to think that it was a good idea to conjugate these passions. This was how Chef Luisa opened her house to us. Since she was a a little girl that she had to learn how to cook. The mother a widow very early and with six children to raise she found in the kitchen her way of survival. At age 12, Luisa was already making "Bread with sausages” before going to school so that her mother could sell them in a store. The cooking heritage and the passion to cook it seems to have passed from generation to generation. Now the Luisa's children like to cook also. The meal can be paired with traditional music as the Fado, the Portuguese music as by Jazz or Flamenco.
